Castello Zammitello

Castello Zamitello is a unique castle that lies on the outskirts of the country village of Mgarr, on the way to Gnejna Bay. Built in Norman Style, it was used to guard against sudden raids by corsairs, as indicated by the four unusual guard turrets adorning its facade.

Many legends surround the place but the one that has persisted the most is the one about the man who lent his name to the building, Baron Bernardo Zamitt, a very wealthy but miserly character, who at one time lived in the castle and had only one daughter, Lucia.

One day the greedy Baron eagerly accepted the proposal of an elderly but wealthy Sicilian Count, much to the deep dismay and protests of his beautiful daughter. Extensive wedding preparations were set in motion and on the morning of the wedding day, Lucia retreated in tears to her room and locked herself in.

As the festivities and dancing started, everyone got merry and Lucia was sent for, but only silence came out of her room. The door was then forced open and the room was found to be empty.
